August 29, 2005
Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans. Gas prices rise immediately .

April 26, 2006
After oil companies earn record first quarter profits, President Bush says,
"Americans understand by and large that the price of crude oil is going up and that [gas] prices are going up, but what they don't want and will not accept is manipulation of the market," Bush said. "And neither will I." He promises an investigation into price gouging allegations.

April 28, 2006
A mere 2 days after pledging to investigate price gouging allegations, President Bush says, there was "no evidence" of price-gouging of consumers. He also rejects calls by some lawmakers for a tax on oil company windfall profits.
